About the Dalmation

The Dalmatian was created in the Middle Ages in India to be both a hunting and carriage dog before there were motor vehicles.

Today this dog is most recognizable as the dog that accompanies firefighters when they are on duty.

Energy and stamina are words that describe the Dalmatian. They never tire and don't like to sit around with nothing to do. They are very happy and loyal dogs. They are happiest when in the presence of their family and don't do well when placed outside. They do make great pets with children but may have too much energy for a small child. They get along well with other animals but may become aggressive with new dogs.

Dalmatians have blue or brown eyes that are set wide apart on the skull. Their ears are wider at the base than they are at the rounded tip. They lie flat on the skull close to the face. Their nose is small with the color varying depending on the color of the spots. Their lips are tight and closed. Their tail is curved and it is carried slightly lowered. Their straight legs are well toned as they reach their round and compact feet. Their coat is short and dense with a sleek feel. The ground color to the dog is white and may have spots, patches or tricolor markings on top of it. Sport is round and very distinct. They are smaller on the head than on the body and they are evenly distributed. Patches are a solid mass of color (black or liver) with no white hair. They are present at birth and don't go away. Tricolor dogs have a mixture of color throughout the body. Some are darker or lighter but neither is very pleasing.

One major health problem that affects Dalmatians is deafness. A large number of puppies are born deaf so checking this before you buy one is a must. They are also prone to urinary infections and allergies.

This breed is not recommended for anyone in an apartment because they are so active. They need bouts of long walks and/or runs daily to keep them entertained or they may become destructive.
